If you’re looking for an afternoon tea experience that blends creativity, nostalgia, and a touch of magic, look no further than the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea at One Aldwych in London. Inspired by Roald Dahl’s beloved classic, (They actually work with the Roald Dahl team) this tea is equal parts playful and luxurious—and it’s safe to say, I had an absolute blast.
Priced at £90 (including a cocktail), this isn’t your traditional scones-and-Earl-Grey tea time. It’s an immersive, imaginative food journey with a theatrical twist, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves sweets, storytelling, or simply wants to experience a different kind of indulgence in the heart of London.
From the moment you sit down, you’re transported into Wonka’s whimsical world and the experience unfolds in playful courses that are fun for your imagination as much as your tastebuds.
Splendid Savouries
First up, the savory bites—a delightful surprise, as they often play second fiddle in themed teas. Here, they shine:
- Coronation chicken sandwich – A nod to British tradition with a flavorful, creamy twist.
- Mushroom toastie – Warm, earthy, and satisfyingly crisp.
- Leek and Shropshire blue cheese quiche – Rich and velvety with a subtle tang.
- Beetroot and horseradish ‘hot ice cream’ – Yes, you read that right. It’s hot, it’s creamy, and it’s weirdly wonderful.
And just when you think you’ve figured things out, they serve you Wonka’s ever-changing cooling tea—a palate cleanser that actually cools your mouth and prepares you for what’s next. It’s pure fun.

SCRUMPTIOUS SWEETS
Next comes the part we’ve all been waiting for: the scrumptious sweets—and they did not disappoint.
- Warm scones (raisin and plain) with ‘snozzberry’ jam and all the cream
- ‘Goodbye Violet’ macaron – A pblueberry tribute to Violet Beauregarde
- Augustus Gloop’s strawberry fudge – Soft, sweet, and perfectly chewy
- ‘Hair toffee’ mousse – Light, airy, and fun to look at
- Butterscotch & soda – Fizzy, sweet nostalgia in a tiny glass
- Caramel chocolate milkshake (mixed by waterfall) – Decadent and playful
- Fabulous fluffy floss – A towering puff of candy floss that’s “strictly not for dentists”
Everything is presented with theatrical flair which makes it that much more enjoyable.

The Tea & Cocktails:
This place also takes its tea and cocktail menu seriously. I chose the Chocolate Noir tea, which was velvety, smooth, and rich with dark chocolate notes. It paired perfectly with the desserts, like drinking a grown-up version of hot cocoa.
For my cocktail, I couldn’t resist the Delicious Purplicious—a vibrant mix of Sipsmith vodka, crème de mûre, apple, blackberry, rhubarb lemonade, and more. It was fruity, fizzy, and dangerously good.
The tea menu is beautifully curated and includes unique blends like:
- Caramel Noir – A deep, rich black tea with soft caramel notes
- Lemon Verbena – Light and citrusy with sherbet vibes
- Berries & Hibiscus – Juicy and caffeine-free
- Lychee & Rose – Bold, floral, and elegant
And for those looking to elevate the experience even further, there’s an optional glass of champagne or extra Fizzy Lifting Drink cocktails (names as fun as the drinks themselves).

Final Thoughts: A Must-Do for Dreamers and Dessert Lovers
From start to finish, the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea at One Aldwych was pure joy. It’s whimsical without being gimmicky, indulgent without being overwhelming, and thoughtfully crafted down to the tiniest detail.
Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just want to treat yourself to something truly unique, this tea is a must. It’s fun, flavorful, and fantastically theatrical, just as Willy Wonka would have wanted it.
